Big News or Big Flop?

July 7, 2011 by Jen Phillips April

Big News or Big Flop?

Whew!  What a wild whirlwind of a week it’s been for social media marketing.  While the rest of the U.S. and Canada were gearing up for their fireworks fueled Independence Day weekends; Google, Facebook and Skype were busy plotting ways to take over the Universe.  At least, the online part of it.

Possible Big Deal #1

Google rolled out its infamous Google + which has the early adopters in a frenzy to score a coveted invitation.  (At this stage, it’s by invite only).  Speculators say Google is looking to go head to head against the behemoth Facebook but since the much talked about Google Buzz and Google Wave didn’t go far I’m in a “wait and see” mode.  You can read more here.

Then, Facebook Raises the Bar. Maybe.

The other big news is the whole Skype and Facebook integration.  Wow!  This sounds like a solid partnership. For local business types who don’t do the marjority of their client meetings over Skype you may not think this is a big deal for business.  However, if you have global clients, Skype—with or without video–is integral to your business.

But, will everyone leap onto the Facebook/Skype connection?  Time will tell.    While Mashable is eager to show mock ups of what the screen shots might look like, they also report Skype and Myspace signed a deal way back in 2007.  That deal wasn’t a game changer.  Will this one?

The next few months will prove if these initiatives have sticking power. Are you excited?   If so, how will you use them in your social media marketing? Post your ideas in the comments below.
