I spent the last week of August at my family’s vacation home near Myrtle Beach, SC.
I’ve been coming here—to this house–since I was 7 years old. Besides my getting older and some new furniture, not that much has changed.
The same swing is on the front porch next to the rocking chairs. The toddlers are still running at top speed. (I have a big Southern family, there are ALWAYS toddlers.)
This week, it’s my niece and nephew.
I’m sitting in the swing writing this post and watching the children head to the beach with my Dad. The children made it two driveways down before they discovered a big puddle from last night’s rain and ran squealing into it. They jumped and bounced, ran in circles and giggled as only toddlers can. It doesn’t take much to entertain two year olds.
Of course, when you’re 2 and the world delights, there’s no reason to “pick up the pace” to hustle to the actual shoreline when a nearby puddle offers nearly as much fun.
It reminds me of some of the entrepreneurs I work with.
They start a Facebook business page, Twitter and Pinterest accounts and they scramble to figure out how to make it all work for their business. They make a few posts and more than a few throw up their hands after a few weeks or months saying “social media doesn’t work.”
And it doesn’t. If you don’t work it.
The key is not to get sidetracked by puddles.
Choose ONE social media platform – for example, Facebook. Then, dedicate some of your marketing time/dollars toward learning the best practices and incorporate them into your marketing strategy.
Take a class, read a book, get the help you need in crafting a strategy that works for YOU and your business. Just like anything in life, you get out of it what you put in. Social media marketing is worth spending some time to get right because once you lay a strong foundation, it’ll continue to grow.
Do you have social media successes you’d like to share? I’d love to hear them, please share in the comments below.
